Gates and their new album Parallel Lives will enter the Fillmore Charlotte Sunday night and bring a popular, indie rock style to the Queen City. The five-piece band’s rise to prominence has come quickly and recently they couldn’t have wrote a stronger narrative for themselves.
Gates formed in 2011 after various band members settled in New Jersey. Within a year, Gates released two EPs, both produced and engineered by Kevin Dye (vocals/guitar) himself. Within two years, the guys landed a record deal with Pure Noise Records and soon after toured the UK.
The band soon became known for their creativity and originality, partly stemming from the lyrical content Dye created. The vocalist stated in an interview with Zero Platoon that many of the first songs he’s written were inspired by the break-up with his girlfriend and the strong opinions he has on world views.
My songs represent what I’m feeling. I’ve always felt that way. That’s how it began, writing about what I was feeling inside and putting it down on paper.
While the band has grown since their debut album, they’ve managed to maintain the creativity and originality that helped shoot them up the charts. With Parallel Lines, Gates dives into the thought of seeing people on the streets and in life, but never actually knowing who they truly are. The idea of two parallel lines, always side by side, but never crossing.
Their tour spanning well over a dozen cities throughout the course of June arrives after their sophomore album Parallel Lives released a week ago. The album received high praise from critical reviews. Both Soundfiction and New Noise Magazine noted that the sophomore effort is easily the band’s best to date. With that said, Gates’ appearance in Charlotte Sunday night is highly anticipated and their unique style creates an enticing event.
