Los Angeles native Nick Waterhouse’s much anticipated Never Twice released via Innovative Leisure Records hit stores this past Friday to plenty of fanfare. The follow-up to 2014’s Holly consists of 10 retro-fabulous soulful tracks. Never Twice sees Waterhouse call on an array of all-star musicians like Paula Henderson (Bari Sax), Ralph Carney (Tenor Sax), Rob Douglas (Bass) and Andrés Renteria (Percussion and Hand Drums) among others to help fulfill Waterhouse’s vision for his third LP. Along with the expert engineering of Michael McHugh and his team, Never Twice is a pleasant surprise in a mainstream world.

Leading track “It’s Time” serves as a stark reminder of Waterhouse’s talents. A hit single which fuses the best of aged soul with a flair for modern appeal, with lyrics “Just for once, I want to hear that something is mine - Tell me it’s time.” This track assures both Waterhouse and the music industry that time has arrived. He’s an essential musician in making Old School Rhythm & Blues great again.

On “Katchi” we see Waterhouse join forces with another star of the old-school soul revival: Leon Bridges. “Katchi,” a term used to describe the loving touch of a woman, produces stellar results. The duo’s vocals are backed by an plethora of instruments that melody together and produce a near irresistible urge to stand up and clap to the rhythm.

Waterhouse owns his style without compromise. This is clearly evident when he goes on to cover the legendary Bob Dylan on “Baby, I’m In the Mood for You.” We witness Waterhouse make the track his own, in such a way that surely Dylan himself would approve. Other notable tracks include the tranquil lounge vibes of “Stanyan Street” and the finger snapping “Tracy.” However, the crown jewel of Never Twice has to be the upbeat “Old Place.” Waterhouse splashes a little bit of mambo into the mix, creating a tune that would make the late great Tito Puente proud. The track can’t help but invite all to drop what they’re doing and boogie down. A heavenly track.

Never Twice is one album we urge you to purchase and show your friends. The album is packed with notorious song-writing and unforgettable melodies that will have today’s generation grateful for the opportunity to vibe to yesterday’s music. It makes for an LP deserving of all praise and accolades.
