It’s been three years since Toronto newcomers Crystalyne released their second EP, The Remedy. The Canadian group created a quite a local following once they stormed onto the scene with two records within two years. However, a lengthy hiatus prompted fans to flood Crystalyne’s twitter inbox with questions regarding when they’d release new music. Over the summer the band answered, releasing two singles, “Air I Breathe” and “Let’s Do Something Crazy.”
Their third EP followed and received positive reception from Crystalyne’s die-hard supporters. Follow also reminded the music world that Crystalyne is most definitely a band on the rise, again.
Crystalyne’s sound slightly changed during their break. Follow is a little less pop punk thank their two previous EPs and features more electronic elements than the band experimented with in the past. The record leads off with “Air I Breathe,” a track Crystalyne supporters are overly familiar with. The track feels like a summer jam and contains a nice, big sounding chorus. Follow highlights Marissa Dattoli’s sweet-sounding vocals the the new energy Crystalyne boasts.
“Let’s Do Something Crazy” accentuates the fact that perhaps their pop punk roots are behind them. The track is very upbeat and littered with video game references. An argument can be made that some lyrics are forced, however the song represents Crystalyne’s personal interests and follows their motto.
We play music and we have fun doing it.
Follow, the title track, caps off the EP and has attracted the most listens from all six songs on the album. Again, it’s very much a cheery track following the EDM-like theme on the album. The lyrics allude to Crystalyne’s return and the path they’re currently on. Like the verse, “Where do we go?” Chances are the Toronto natives are going upward and before too long will showcase their fresh sound to the world.
