Is Avatar the best live rock act? That’s a matter of who you ask, but once you’ve witnessed them live, you’ll understand why their name comes up. Touring alongside In This Moment and Motionless in White (two heavy hitters themselves), Avatar steals the show. Playing to a sold-out Heaven Stage at The Masquerade on this Friday night, Atlanta belonged to Avatar.

Led by the tongue-wagging and captivating front-man Johannes Eckerström, the aesthetically pleasing quintet are a force to be reckoned with. Decked in matching carnival/circus-themed get-ups, the boys of Avatar come out blasting ear-drums with opening track “Hail to the Apocalypse,” which sends the attending crowd into a shouting and head-banging frenzy.

Not one to lower the bar, Avatar maintain the rock euphoria with performances of tracks “For the Swarm” and “Torn Apart” before kicking it up a notch with mosh pit  forming singles “Bloody Angel” and fan-favorite “The Eagle has Landed;” However, Avatar saved the best for last. As the band prepares to perform closing track “Smells like a Freak Show,” Eckerström asks the Atlanta crowd if they’re ready for pandemonium; judging by the loud cheers, Atlanta seemed ready to go.

Joining the boys of Avatar on stage for the closing act were circus performers, by way of a sword-swallowing lady, a yo-yo maestro, and a fire-breathing man, which collectively gave the Atlanta fan-base quite the unforgettable evening.
