Chvrches brings ‘Love Is Dead’ to North Carolina for two nights

The time has finally come! Chvrches is out and about this fall, touring on behalf of their third full length Love Is Dead, and is nearing not one but two stops in North Carolina. It’s been two years since the Scottish trio visited, most recently with Death Cab For Cutie in 2016, but the synth pop show is back on Oct. 9 at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville, N.C. and Oct. 16 at The Fillmore in Charlotte, N.C.

Chvrches took the synth pop world by storm a half-decade ago with the release of their debut album, The Bones Of What You Believe in 2013. Since the release, the Scottish trio, consisting of the harmonizing vocals of Lauren Mayberry and the irresistible beat-makers Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, the band has nearly accomplished it all, most recently debuting Love Is Dead. The infectious tone that the electronic music community fell in love with in 2013 rolls on with the 2018 release, so much so that it reached No. 1 on both Billboard’s Rock and Alternative charts.

The band’s third full-length is a level up in every way and the most complete project they’ve released to date. While the lyrics explore the feelings of “grappling with what’s going on in the world, but also what happens in your lives simultaneously,” frontwoman Lauren Mayberry has said, it’s more about the emotions that the music provokes. The record skews toward the poppiest the band has sounded, yet at the same time it’s undeniably aggressive and vulnerable. Between Mayberry’s harmonizing vocals and the infectious synths, the band has found a knack for bringing utopia to life in their music.

The same can be said for the band’s live show, which is just as much a visual spectacle as it is a musical performance. In 2016 when Chvrches last played The Fillmore Charlotte, Yahoo! live streamed the concert. Fortunately, thanks to YouTube, the video is still around to admire (and smile at between songs thanks to Mayberry’s witty sense of humor and personality).
