Chevelle braves the rain and delivers a heart pounding set, spanning 17 years

The hard-rock trio Chevelle tackled the weather on Tuesday night at the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre and gave the Queen City a reason to brave the rain. The Chicago natives, consisting of Pete Loeffler (vocals and guitar), Sam Loeffler (drums) and brother-in-law Dean Bernadini (bass) are currently co-headlining with Bush supporting their new album The North Corridor.

After The Dead Deads warmed up the Amphitheatre, Chevelle emerged to a warm welcoming and thanked the crowd with their energy.

The trio began the night with “An Island” and “Take Out The Gunman,” two tracks off their highest charting album, La Gárgola. While Chevelle’s style has always leaned on the heavy side, their ensuing song “Last Days” only escalated the power already instilled in the set. The audience was already feeling Pete’s zeal, particularly in the pit, evident by the horns that shook through the air.

Old school fan favorites from 2004, “The Clincher” and “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)” followed.
Pete doesn’t talk much during sets. As mentioned above, he prefers to let the music do the talking, however the vocalist couldn’t help but take a moment to communicate with the audience when he gazed down at the stage.

There’s a condom on my pedal board.

Chevelle’s sound is engrossing, both melodic and heavy at the same time. Lead vocalist and guitarist Pete Loeffler isn’t showy, and bassist Dean Bernadini follow suits. Although, despite minimal theatrics, the sound is huge and projects well. There’s a healthy balance present. The music welcomes moshing, but at the same time it’s beneficial to step back and absorb the beauty of Chevelle’s performance.

The trio continued their set with a number of tracks off The North Corridor, including the album’s first track “Door To Door Cannibals” and “Joyride (Omen).” However, even though Chevelle was touring on behalf of The North Corridor, their set featured many classics. Then again, they’ve earned the luxury of hand-picking a 16-song set spanning eight albums dating back to 1999.

“Face To The Floor” and “The Red” nearly capped off the night before the audience pleaded for more. Chevelle continued and concluded with “Forfeit” and “Send The Pain Below.” Fans continued to fill the Amphitheatre in preparation for Bush but immediately took notice of Chevelle and their heavy rock performance as if they’d never seen a similar presentation.

Chevelle continues their tour across the country supporting Bush while continuing to play headlining shows sporadically. Grab tickets for their upcoming run with Disturbed in the fall.
