Michigan emo-rock band Charmer released their critically heralded debut, self-titled album, Charmer, this week and it’s well worth the listen.
he Marquette, MI band is reinvigorating the midwest emo scene with their twinkly guitars and heartfelt lyrics.
Charmer broke down each track on the new album with Gold Flake Paint.
“Topanga is the last song we wrote for the album,” Charmer said of their hit song “Topanga Lawrence.” “We were so focused on making our debut LP a true “Emo” record that we ignored a lot of the pop elements we utilized in our first EP’s. We wanted one song on there that would be more approachable to a casual listener. Neil had a guitar riff that I loved and I had one rhythm section that I really wanted to put in a song.
“When we showed that we had to our drummer Nick that’s when it all came together. Not really knowing what to do for lyrics I used the opportunity to write a fictional romance about my childhood love Topanga Lawrence from Boy Meets World by using a combination of prior life experiences throughout college. My brother also plays trumpet on this track which means the world to me and is an element I wanted to add to our music. I’m very glad it made the LP.”
