In case you haven’t heard, a couple of the most iconic mid-2000s pop punk/emo bands are in Charlotte this weekend for a midsummer extravaganza that’s destined to bring back old memories. Dashboard Confessional and The All-American Rejects, along with The Maine and The Social Animals crash the Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre on Sunday, August 13.
Dashboard Confessional and The All-American Rejects dominated and helped define the music scene a decade ago. Each of the band’s hits played endlessly on mainstream radio and many could be found on favorite video game soundtrack or television program. There was no escaping the stronghold that The All-American Rejects’ “Dirty Little Secret” and Dashboard Confessional’s “Hands Down” held on pop culture. Although, while both bands relished the spotlight and the fruits of their labor, each disappeared come 2012. Dashboard Confessional announced a hiatus in 2011 while The All-American Rejects faded away without warning. The couple essentially burnt out, suffering from the stigma that they were creating music to appease the masses.
However, it’s been a long five years and the boys are back and ready to give you hell. In April, The All-American Rejects announced that a fifth studio album is on the way and recently released the two lead singles, “Sweat” and “Close Your Eyes.” Both tracks have pushed The All-American Rejects back into the fold and ignite an excitement that hasn’t been felt since 2005. While Dashboard Confessional hasn’t confirmed concrete plans to release a new album in this calendar year, vocalist Chris Carrabba has stayed busy since 2009’s Alter the Ending. It’s rumored that the band is working with plenty new material that could be heard sooner rather than later.
The Maine celebrates their sixth studio album, Lovely Little Lonely, which many heralded as the band’s best work to date. Jesse Richman of Alternative Press wrote, “The result is an album that feels timeless, even on first impact. It’s the Maine’s best batch of songs since Pioneer, their catchiest material since Can’t Stop Won’t Stop and their most cohesive work to date.” The Maine slots in perfectly with their tour partners and elevates the run as one of the most anticipated of the summer.
