We’re now one year removed from the release of Tegan and Sara‘s Love You To Death - the Canadian duo’s eighth studio album that was every bit evolutionary as it was catchy. Throughout the sisters’ two-decade long career, they’ve never settled for creating the same record twice. Whether it’s The Con, Sainthood or the chart-topping Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara have always kept pushing for something new and unique with every installment. While Love You to Death surprised diehard fans initially with its upbeat, poppy glow, the album has quickly become a cornerstone for the duo’s remarkable year.
Thus far, twin sisters Tegan and Sara have sold over one million albums, have received seven Gold certifications, one Double Platinum certification, three Juno Awards, two Polaris Prize nominations and a GRAMMY nomination. They’re kind of a big deal. TIME declared Tegan and Sara “bona fide pop stars” and over the past year Love You to Death has only helped solidify that claim. However, as bright and vibrant as the duo’s music is, it’s what Tegan and Sara have done off the stage in 2016 that garners indisputable attention.
Tegan and Sara have been openly gay since the start of their career and have become recognized spokespersons for the LGBTQ community. “Fighting for economic justice, health and representation for LGBTQ girls and women,” they founded the Tegan and Sara Foundation in 2016. As children, the sisters’ parents instilled “a certain level of politics in us and made us empathetic and conscious of thinking about other people,” Tegan and Sara told the Charlotte Observer last week. From a young age, they had an understanding of racism and bullying and the importance of respecting one another, being good people and good friends.
Last fall, when the first part of Tegan and Sara’s Love You to Death Tour stopped in Asheville, the performers donated the funds due to HB2 and helped push the fight for equality in North Carolina. While other artists have shied away from hosting concerts in North Carolina, due to the political environment, Tegan and Sara continue to stand up for what’s right and use their platform to push social change.
Instead of one show date in North Carolina, Tegan and Sara will stop in the state’s two largest cities on back to back nights. The tour begins on June 7 in Norfolk, Virginia before heading to Charlotte (The Fillmore, June 8) and Raleigh (The Ritz, June 9). The string of shows leads up to Bonnaroo and Pride Island, the biggest live music event in New York City Pride history. Tegan and Sara are set to headline Day 2 of the three-day festival that will take place on Hudson River Park’s Pier 26.
Tickets for the tour, including Charlotte and Raleigh are on sale now.
